Saint Sophia Cathedral is a monument of 11th - century architecture and named after Hagia Sophia Constantinople now known as Istanbul. Founded by Vladimir the Great c 958 -1015 Prince of Novgorod and Grand Prince of Kyiv.
The building is built of large natural stone granite and quartzite in the Byzantine technique. The bell tower was added in 1699.
